Tony T. Smith Calls for a Living Wage on Moral and Economic Principles

A person working full-time in Nevada earning the state minimum wage makes $17,160 per year before taxes.  As of 2017 the annual cost to raise a child is about $13,000.  The cheapest rent in Las Vegas is about $8,400 per year.  It is clear looking at these numbers that someone working full-time cannot meet the basic necessities of life, let alone have enough to save.  And this applies to middle-class incomes as well, when the cost of student loans and  increasing medical expenses are factored into the equation, coupled with the Republicans' tax legislation targeting the middle class.

This is why Tony is proposing that Nevada join several other states in enacting a livable wage that ensures anyone working full-time earns a wage sufficient to live on and to save or invest for the future.

Tony T. Smith is the Only Candidate in Nevada Voluntarily Capping Campaign Contributions

Candidate for Nevada Assembly District 4 Tony T. Smith is officially the only candidate in Nevada voluntarily capping contributions to his campaign in an effort to remain independent from the influence of wealthy donors.  "I believe our representatives must work for the people and not the highest bidder," said Tony, explaining why he caps contributions at $250 when candidates in Nevada are permitted to raise up to $10,000 per person.

Tony T. Smith Answers Question From Local Activist About Money in Politics

Tony T. Smith was asked by a local activist about how his campaign is remaining independent of Big Money donors while speaking at a NORML event to raise awareness about the federal assault on legal and regulated marijuana.  Tony was happy to explain how his campaign is fighting the influence of wealthy donors by voluntarily capping contributions at $250.  Tony believes it is time for our representatives to work for the people instead of the highest bidder.

Tony T. Smith Calls for a "Civil Gideon"

Candidate for Nevada's Assembly District 4 Tony T. Smith is calling for implementation of a "Civil Gideon" program in Nevada.  "Civil Gideon" takes its name from the U.S. Supreme Court case that recognized a right to an attorney for criminal defendants that could not otherwise afford one.  Civil Gideon laws would ensure anyone involved in a legal matter involving a fundamental right (e.g., custody cases involving the fundamental right to raise one's child) or a basic human need (e.g., eviction cases where a person faces the risk of homelessness) would have the right to an appointed attorney if they could not otherwise afford one.  A person should not be denied justice merely because of their income level.

LEADER OF BOGUS NEVADA RECALL EFFORT TOOK IN WHOPPING $0 IN SMALL DONATIONS

The Nevada GOP's leaders are subverting the voters' will expressed in the last election by  attempting to recall 3 Democratic/Independent state senators.  Tony T. Smith is opposed to this shady play by the Nevada GOP.

A prime example of the hypocrisy of this effort is that recall leader and "man of the people" State Senator Michael Roberson took in a grand total of $0 from small donors last year. He should focus on representing his constituents rather than wealthy donors.

TONY T. SMITH SIGNS PLEDGE BACKING CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO END BIG MONEY IN POLITICS

Candidate for Nevada's Assembly District 4 Tony T. Smith signed a pledge showing his full support for amending our Constitution if necessary to finally end Big Money in politics.  Tony will fight to pass the toughest campaign finance laws in the country if elected to make sure our representatives are working for the people, not powerful special interests.

TONY T. SMITH ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR ASSEMBLY DISTRICT 4 TO FIGHT FOR AN HONEST POLITICAL SYSTEM AND AN HONEST DEAL

Local attorney and political activist Tony T. Smith announced his candidacy for Nevada Assembly District 4 on July 29, 2017.

Tony is running to pass a comprehensive series of legislative and community initiatives called “The Honest Deal” to ensure all Nevadans have the vibrant economy, sustainable environment, and strong communities they deserve.  This century will present enormous changes for our economy, environment, and society – Tony T. Smith is a leader proposing big ideas to meet these big challenges.

What stands in the way of our ability to realize big ideas to meet big challenges is our corrupt campaign finance system.  Tony believes that big money in politics is poison to our democracy.  This is why he is running a “practice what you preach” campaign and refusing to accept any donation over $250.  The people of Assembly District 4 deserve a representative that is only accountable to them and not to special interests.
