Candidate for Nevada's Assembly District 4 Tony T. Smith is calling for implementation of a "Civil Gideon" program in Nevada. "Civil Gideon" takes its name from the U.S. Supreme Court case that recognized a right to an attorney for criminal defendants that could not otherwise afford one. Civil Gideon laws would ensure anyone involved in a legal matter involving a fundamental right (e.g., custody cases involving the fundamental right to raise one's child) or a basic human need (e.g., eviction cases where a person faces the risk of homelessness) would have the right to an appointed attorney if they could not otherwise afford one. A person should not be denied justice merely because of their income level.
